Dinos Head to Ontario

Filed under: — Matt Skinn @ 8:42 am

After a successful weekend visit to the Maritimes, the Calgary Dinos once again hit the road this weekend to play OUA powerhouses Brock and McMaster. The team leaves Thursday for its games on Friday in St. Catharines, ON, and Saturday in Hamilton, ON.

The Dinos hope to return to full strength this weekend after playing last weekend without point guards Whit Hornsberger and Josh Feist, and without big man Sonny Khangura. Currently, Whit is nursing a strained hamstring, while both Josh and Sonny have ankle injuries. Despite the injuries, the Dinos played well in Nova Scotia finishing 2-1 losing to Cape Breton University, while defeating both Saint Mary’s and Acadia.

In Brock, the Dinos will be facing a team that reached the National Semi-finals just a year ago. The Badgers are led by the National Player of the Year, Kevin Steinstra, a 6′7″, 250 pound post player. Last year, Kevin averaged 19.00 ppg and 9.73 rpg to earn First team All-Canadian, OUA Player of the Year and CIS Player of the Year. The Badgers also have one of the best point guards in the country in Brad Rootes who is a savvy court leader, and a great outside shooter. Despite the losses of starters Morgan Fairweather, Kevin French, and Dustin Bianchin as well as post player Bronko Miscovic, the Badgers will once again be a force in the OUA.

As for the McMaster Marauders, this year marks the return of star guard Ben Katz. Katz missed all of last season after suffering a knee injury. Last year also marked the first time in many years that the Marauders did not make the National tournament. The Marauders display one of the quicker back courts in Canada with Justin Gunter and Martin Ajayi, as well as powerful post player Adam Steiner. The Marauders will be a tough test for the Dinos as the start of the Canada West season is quickly approaching.

Game times at St. Catharines and Hamilton are 7pm on Friday October 21, and Saturday, October 22. The Dinos open up the regular season next weekend at home against the UBC Thunderbirds.
