Player to Watch: Robbie Sihota

Making the transition from High School to University play is not an easy one, but one that Dinos Freshman Forward Robbie Sihota is making look easier and easier. Gradually adapting to the speed, strength, and size of the Canada West Conference, Robbie looks to step up his game as the second half of the season begins.

Robbie joined the Dinos after an outstanding high school career at Lester B. Pearson in Calgary. Robbie led the Patriots to a berth in the City final, as well as the Provincial Consolation Championship. But I think Robbie would be the first one to tell you, he isn’t in high school any more.

Not able to simply rely on his athleticism, wingspan and talent, Robbie is learning to play at the CIS level. Defense being the priority every game, it is not only about blocking shots, but getting in the right position to make the team better on the their half of the court. And Robbie is quickly gaining experience and confidence, especially playing alongside the likes of 5th year Forward Chris Wright, and fellow Rookie Ross Bekkering. Both Sihota and Bekkering will lead the Dinos in the future, but much is expected of this talented pairing now.

Robbie finished the first half on a positive note against Saskatchewan. In game one, Robbie was solid scoring 9 points and grabbing 8 rebounds while adding 2 blocked shots in only 18 minutes of time. In the second game, Robbie was equally as strong recording 8 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks and two steals. His weekend also included a huge two handed dunk driving past Saskatchewan forward and Canada West Player of the Year, Andrew Spagrud.

Robbie hopes to carry on this success into the second half of the season as the Dinos race towards the playoffs!
