Huge Weekend Series Against U of A

Whenever the U of A Bears and the Dinos get together, it is a big game, but this weekend is especially crucial for the playoff aspirations of the home-standing Calgary team. Alberta (7-5) sits in 2nd place in the Central Division, while Calgary is 4-8. If the Dinos are to make a serious run at playoff contention, they must step up this weekend.

Alberta split with the Univ. of Winnipeg in Edmonton last weekend, while the Dinos also split with Brandon. The Bears have veteran post man Scott Gordon coming off a hot game last Saturday as he scored 24 pts. Gordon averages 12 pts. a game to go along with 5.3 rebounds. In
the back-court the hot-shooting of Dean Whalen is Alberta’s main threat. Whalen averages 18.6 pts. , mostly from beyond the arc, and he adds 3.4 rebounds.

The Dinos seem to live and die with the efforts of 5th year post player Chris Wright who is scoring at a 15.7 pt/game clip with 7.9 rebounds. Back-court mates Brian Finniss (11.7 pts.) and Cody Darrah (11.5 pts.) are the other ‘go to’ scorers for the Dinos. Josh Feist will be called upon to step up his game and lead Calgary from the point guard spot. Feist is the assist leader with 3.4 / game.

The Dinos have suffered a rash of sickness and injury problems since the Christmas break, and two more players have gone down in practice this week. Greg Jobagy, 1st year post, suffered ligament damage in his leg, and Jeremy Odland is out with a foot injury. The flu and cold bugs seem to be attacking other team members, so we just keep our fingers crossed for Friday and Saturday.

Calgary and Alberta play at 8:00 pm both nights at the Jack Simpson Gym.
