Wyoming Get Past Dinos

Filed under: — Matt Skinn @ 8:04 am

Quickness and a better shooting touch from the foul line served the Wyoming Cowboys well as the visitors prevailed 79-67 in exhibition basketball at the U of C Saturday night. Wyoming’s two back-court aces, Brandon Ewing and Brad Jones were a wrecking crew for the Cowboys - Ewing, a dazzling talent bombed for 26 pts. including 10/11 from the foul line, while Jones slashed, dished and shot his way to a rare ‘triple-double’ with 15 pts.-11 rebounds-10 assists.

The Wyoming club took advantage of 19 Calgary turnovers and continually scored in transition. The Dinos came out strong in the first half and claimed a 36-35 lead at the break as Brian Finniss’ three point shooting sparked the offensive attack. On the night Calgary was led by Robbie Sihota with 11 pts. and 11 boards, Finniss with 12 pts. and speedy guard Josh Feist with 13 pts. and 5 assists.

Calgary was only 60% on 28 free throw attempts, but a respectable 45% from the field, while Wyoming shot 80% from the line and 45% from the floor. Wyoming won the battle on the boards with 44 rebounds to 35 for the Dinos.

Calgary Head Coach Dan Vanhooren played all 12 of his players as he rolled the line-up over at will, and several of the Dinos newcomers showed well for their first taste of university action. Joe Schow and Sonny Khangura both looked comfortable in the post, and Brendan Groat
played some good minutes after sitting out all of last season with injury problems.

The same two teams are at it again at 7:00 pm Sunday at the Jack Simpson Gym.
