Cowboys clobber Depleted Dinos
Led once again by their outstanding sophomore guard Brandon Ewing, the visiting University of Wyoming Cowboys laid a sound licking on the Calgary Dinos as they topped the home team 91-68. Ewing’s slashing moves were good for 21 pts. and 7 assists, and he had 4 other
teammates in double figures.
As veterans Josh Feist, Brian Finniss, and Brendan Groat watched from the bench, Calgary’s depleted line-up was picked apart by a quicker, stronger, and better shooting Wyoming team. The Dinos committed 14 turnovers in a very sloppy first half, and the Cowboys seized the
opportunity to snatch a 42-21 lead at the break. Calgary shot a dismal 27% in that half compared to 57% for Wyoming.
The Wyoming dominance continued in the final frame, although the Dinos shooters warmed up to a 43 % clip as Cody Darrah, the lone available starter at the guard spot led with 18 pts., and he was helped by 12 from freshman Dustin Reding including 3 of 4 from 3 pt.
range.
The Dinos will now take a short break before resuming practice prior to the regular pre-season start in October. Coach Dan Vanhooren will look forward to the return of his starting guards, the veteran Groat, and the eventual healing of Ross Bekkering’s broken finger, suffered
in practice last week. The next team activity for the Dinos will be a day working at the
‘Habitat For Humanity’ townhouse site in NW Calgary this coming Tuesday. This will be the 2nd year for the Habitat workday for the team and coaches.
