Mentorship Program Continues to Help Dinos

Filed under: — Matt Skinn @ 4:44 pm

You are at the airport on a Wednesday or Thursday morning bound for Ontario or the West Coast, and you will miss classes for at least two days that week as you play basketball for the Dinos. Every second week brings a new destination and a new challenge to your academic and personal schedule.

The life of a varsity basketball player is full of practice time, training, travel, games, and shortened academic weeks. In order to accomplish academic goals, a student - athlete needs to be organized, confident, and determined. It helps to have the assistance of someone with experience in facing similar life challenges as you try and succeed as a student and an athlete.

The Dinos Basketball Team are fortunate to have just such alumni and supporters to act as mentors for each player on the 15 man roster. Over the course of the school year, and even through the summer months in many cases, mentors from the professional ranks of business, law, education, sciences, and medicine work on behalf of our athletes in advising, listening, guiding, and encouraging career and personal development. These mentors, many of whom are former University and College players themselves, are also basketball fans who follow their player’s progress on the court.

In some cases Dinos players have been working with the same mentor for the past 3 years, and it is not uncommon for the mentor to have made a significant positive impact on the life of the young man. Career discussions can turn into post-university jobs, and encouraging counsel can help a young player through the inevitable rough patches in the life of an athlete. In so many ways these mentors can be a major boost to the success of athletes in our program.

The Dinos team wishes to thank the following mentors for giving generously of their time and expertise in aid of our players: Royce Baker, Kelley Charlebois, Phil Christie, Rob Driscoll, Brian
Fleming, Dr. David Jones, Anton Joseph, Wes Jickling, Adam Kleitsch, Ian Minnifee, Craig Newman, Kurt Pedersen, Keith Smith, Geoff Thompson, Dale Vanhooren, Richard Weibach, and
Dr. Bruce Wright.
