The Dunk Heard Round the ‘Jack’

ross-bekkering-dunk1.jpg It was a usual night in the realms of the Jack Simpson Gymnasium on November 10, 2006. The University of Simon Frasier Clan was in town to face the University of Calgary Dinos in a Canada West Conference battle. The game featured two of the larger teams in the CIS each boasting a slew of tall and equally girth post players eager to leave their mark in the game. It seemed as though the game would be a war as each team played physically and challenged their opponent. And then it happened…

It started with Ross Bekkering, the 6′8″ gazelle like forward for the Dinos. He blocked a Clan shot under neath the Dino basket towards the sideline where Dino guard Jeremy Odland was able to scramble to pick up the loose ball. Rather than gather up the loose ball, ‘JO’ leapt off of one foot and threw an unthinkable, easily interceptable one handed pass up the floor aimed at Dino Floor General Josh Feist. On any other night, it was a play gone ary, but not this night. The pass scraped the sideline, as well as the Clan defender into the fair hands of Point ‘God’ Feist. Josh penetrated down the right side of the floor, with Sharp Shooting Cody Darrah streaking down the left. An easy decision right? Once again, not on this night my friends. Reaching the baseline, and surveying the situation at full speed, Josh unmistakingly shovelled a right handed pass backwards towards the foul line. While continuing under the hoop, Josh was in perfect view to see Ross Bekkering, who had hustled the full length of the floor, catch the ball just inside the foul line and take off. The sight of a defender would have caused most to double clutch or swerve around to the hoop, but on this crisp Fall evening, Mr. Bekkering decided to go right at the brave Clan defender. The photo tells the rest of the story. The Dino crowd and fellow Dino players exploded in excitement. The Clan faithful could merely ask for an offensive foul.

Oh yes, on this fair night, it was a moment that will long be remembered in the annals of Dino lore. On this night, it was the Dunk Heard Round the Jack!-MJS-

Dino of the Week, November 20, 2006 - Robbie Sihota

The U of C Dinos faced the veteran Lethbridge Pronghorns this past weekend at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium in a pair of critical Mountain Division match-ups. The result: a split for the Dinos, and a log jam in the Mountain Division as three teams, U of S, U of A, and U of C all sit at 3-3 while U of L sits at 2-4. A major performer over the weekend for the Dinos was 2nd year power forward Robbie Sihota, this week’s Dino of the Week.

Robbie was in early foul trouble in the first match-up against the ‘Horns, but was able to use his playing time to the fullest. Robbie scored only 7 points in the first half, but exploded in the second half for 14 points to finish the game 8-12 from the field, 2-3 from beyond the 3pt. arc, and 3-4 from the free throw line for 21 points in only 19 minutes of action. Robbie also added 3 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal in a very efficient night.

In the Dinos overtime loss, Robbie was once again a force in the paint. Robbie played a key role in the Dinos press and was huge on the glass. Despite a poor shooting night (3-11 from the field), Robbie finished 6-8 from the free throw line, and pulled down 10 big rebounds. Robbie finished the night with 13 points and 10 rebounds in 33 minutes of action.

The Dinos finish up the first half of the season with 4 more critical Mountain Division games. This weekend, the Dinos travel to Edmonton to face the Golden Bears who are currently tied with the Dinos for first place in the Division. The Dinos, who are 3-1 in their last four games hope to make a splash as the Bears have lost 3 straight games.
