Energizing the Dinos - DOTW: Jeremy Odland

Filed under: — Matt Skinn @ 10:49 pm

It’s not necessarily the numbers that stagger you with 4th year Swing man Jeremy Odland, but the intagibles that are so valuable for his Dinos team. This weekend was nothing different. Whether asked to step in and guard bigger players, or guard smaller scorers, ‘JO’ is always there with his energy to help the Dino cause.

This weekend, Jeremy helped the Dinos to a 1-1 record after beating the Regina Cougars, and narrowly falling to the Brandon Bobcats. Against the Cougars, Jeremy was consistent off the bench scoring 9 points in 15 minutes of action while hitting on 2 three point bombs, grabbing 2 steals and helping out with a block.

However, Saturday’s performance, despite the loss, was the best of Jeremy’s career at the U of C. Jeremy was everywhere in leading the Dino second half comeback. In 28 minutes of action, JO scored a team high 20 points on 5 or 10 from the field and 10 of 13 from the free throw line. Even more impressive was his rebounding total: 12 including an astonishing 8 offensive rebounds which lead to his numerous trips to the charity stripe.

Jeremy will hope to continue his energetic play as the Dinos hit the road for 4 straight games. First to interior B.C. to face off against Thompson Rivers and Fraser Valley, then across the Plains to battle the Wesmen of Winnipeg and the Manitoba Bisons. Stay tuned for all of your Dino Action!

Close but…

Bobcats Edge Ice - Cold Dinos

As hot as the shooting was in Friday’s win over Regina, so was it as cold as ice on Saturday in Calgary’s 82 - 79 loss to the Brandon Bobcats. At 34 % ( 23/68) , the Dinos had so many field goal attempts bounce of the iron, that catching the resilient Brandon team proved to be too tough a task.

Launching 27 three point attempts , Calgary only connected on 7 … 26 %. The Dinos cashed 26/37 free throws to keep the game close after trailing by as much as 14 in the first half, but a late surge could only tie Brandon with less than a minute remaining.
The 14 - 2 Bobcats got a game - winning 3 point shot from Adam Hartman, while a trey atttempt at the buzzer from Robbie Sihota went long for Calgary.

The Dinos got a stellar performance from 4th year wing man Jeremy Odland, who had 20 points and 12 big rebounds; ‘JO’ was tireless on the offensive boards, and was the driving force in the Dinos second half charge. Brian Finniss also notched a double - double of 13 points and 10 rebounds, but the inside game for Brandon proved too much, with the Dinos giving up 20 points off Bobcat put-backs, as the post duo of Hartman and Yuri Whyms feasted for 25 and 24 pts. respectively.

Calgary is headed on the road for the next two weekends, first to Abbotsford and Kamloops to play Fraser Valley and Thompson Rivers, and , on Feb. 2/3 to Winnipeg to face Manitoba and Winnipeg. The regular seaso wraps up on Feb. 9/10 with a pair of games with the Saskatchewan Huskies here in Calgary.
