Dino News - Keeping you up to Date!

Filed under: — Matt Skinn @ 11:49 am

Former Dinos post man , Ian Ferguson, was married on August 11 to former Dinos Volleyball star Robyn Horner. The couple will continue to live in Calgary, and Ian will be finishing a degree in Education, and coaching this winter at Cochrane HS.

The top Dinos player academically last season ? None other than big Sonny Khangura, who earned Academic All- Canadian status with his 3.50 GPA. This is quite an accomplishment for the big man, who finished strongly on the court in his 5th and final year, and improved markedly in the classroom.

After starting to work for Anton Joseph’s ‘Strive Fitness’ Centre in South Calgary, Brian Finniss, one of the Dinos co-captains last year, got the call from Citybasket Recklinghausen, the team in Germany for which Chris Wright played last year. ‘B’ will enjoy the reduced practice schedule and the opportunity to see some of Europe in his spare time. Former Dinos Wright and Chris Harris are just down the road playing for Hagen BBV.

Ross Bekkering and his Canada teammates advanced to the quarter finals in the World Student Games in Thailand with an impressive 83-54 shellacking of Israel . On Wednesday they beat Germany for a berth in the semi-final, but lost to Lithuania. The team won a bronze medal by shading Japan 90-84 in yet another come from behind win.

The all-time , All-Dinos family has to be the Bekkerings. Anna and Cory both played 5 years for the Women’s Dinos and their husbands, Jeff Loomis and Mark Gillrie both played for the Dino Men’s Team. Brothers Henry and Ross will suit up together this season, while youngest sister Janelle, who sat out last season with a knee injury, will play at Gonzaga University in Spokane. Their father, Simon, was a University player in the ’70s.

Assistant Coach , Matt Skinn is coaching with the Alberta U-17 Team in Quebec this week, and they are in the Final against the home province after having beaten Ontario. Bert Church - Airdrie’s Dominyc Coward is the leading scorer for Alberta, and he is a hot prospect in next year’s recruiting class for UC. Update … Alberta wins the gold over Quebec 73 - 68. Congrats to Matt, who has had a great record in Summer Hoops , both with Alberta and, of course, with the Junior Dinos.

Former Dinos Surinder Grewal and Aman Heran are running a series of junior basketball camps in the Lower Mainland with some success.
