Blues Beat Dinos in Overtime
Not being able to control the other team at the defensive end, and committing too many turnovers will usually mean defeat for a basketball team, and, despite some hot shooting, the Calgary Dinos learned that lesson Sunday against the University of Toronto Blues. Toronto capitalized on a porous Dinos defense and numerous Calgary turnovers to edge the Dinos 96-92 in overtime Sunday in the final game of the Naismith Classic in Waterloo, Ontario.
Despite out-shooting Toronto 49% to 47% and out-rebounding the Blues 44-31, Calgary paid for the 26 turnovers vs. only 9 for Toronto as Calgary had only 69 shots while Toronto took 85. Henry Bekkering led the Dinos with 27 pts. and 10 rebounds, but it took Tyler Fidler’s 3 free throws with just seconds left to get the Dinos to overtime, as they overcame a 10 point deficit in the last 3 minutes of regulation. Fidler had 14 for the game, while Cody Darrah added 11, and Jeff Price had 12. Ross Bekkering had 13 points and 8 boards.
Toronto finished the tournament at 3-0, while Calgary dropped to 2-1. The Dinos next action will be this coming weekend with games at Montana Tech and Carroll College in Montana Friday and Saturday. The first home game will be October 27 vs. Whitworth College of Spokane.
