Dinos Split on BC Road Trip - Tied for 1st in the Mountain Division at 3-1
Coming off of two dramatic home court victories against UBC and UVic last weekend, the Dinos Men’s Basketball team this time travelled to the coast of BC to play against the SFU Clan and the TWU Spartans.
Game 1:
SFU Clan 94 DINOS 82
Shooting a hot 60% from the floor and 57% from the 3 point arc, the Clan were able to seemingly score at will against the Dinos in a very porous defensive effort. Able to come back from an early deficit, the Dinos were able to cut the lead to 6 points at half time thanks in large part to the 3 pt shooting touch of point guard Jeff Price who had 15 at the half. The Dinos had to play the majority of the first half without their starting front court as Henry and Ross Bekkering, and Robbie Sihota all had to watch with 2 fouls.
The second half began with the Clan scoring on 6 consecutive possessions including 4 threes from Kevin Shaw to put the Dinos in a hole early in the third frame. The Clan would go on to score 32 points in the third quarter: the most against the Dinos in any game this season.
Clawing back, the Dinos attacked with their athleticism inside, posting up with Sihota and the Bekkerings and were able to cut the lead from 20 to 6 with 3 minutes remaining. A key steal on the break sealed the victory for the Clan as they came away with the victory as well as their first conference win of the season. The loss was a disappointing one for the Dinos who were unable to capitalize on their opportunities and simply could not come up with the stops needed for the victory.
The Clan were led by 6 players in double figures including all 5 starters. The Dinos were led by Cody Darrah and Jeff Price who each tallied 16 points in the loss, while Ross Bekkering led the Dinos with 11 rebounds in only 16 minutes of playing time.
Game 2:
DINOS 99 TWU 77
The Dinos looked hungry and ready against the Spartans on Saturday night in Langley. Facing off against a quick and pressing team, the Dinos were able to control the ball, use their advantage on the inside, and come away with the win. The Dinos looked like a completely different team from the one that played just 24 hours previous, led by the efforts of Henry Bekkering, who paced the Dinos with 20 points and 10 rebounds in only 23 minutes of action.
The Dinos stormed out of the gates leading 27-7 at one point, and were up 34-18 after the first quarter. The Dinos limited their turnovers to just 7 against the running and jumping Spartans, and were able to put them away with the stellar ball handling of 6′9″ Tyler Fidler, Brennen Fule, and Cody Darrah who had to pick up the slack with an ailing Jeff Price.
5 Dinos reached double figures: Henry Bekkering (20), Ross Bekkering (16), Robbie Sihota (15), Tyler Fidler (13) and Cody Darrah (10). The Dinos dominated the backboards winning the rebounding for the game 62-28 including 25 offensive rebounds. Ross and Henry both grabbed 10 boards while Cody Darrah added seven, Tyler Fidler, Jeff Price and Robbie Sihota had 6.
The Dinos travel to Lethbridge for a double header with the Pronghorns this upcoming weekend for their first inter-division games of the season. The Horns are led by Guards Richard Steed, Ryan Anderson, Shawn Nelson and Quinn VanGaalen. Action begins on Friday night at 8pm.
